The Angry Winter Queen strikes again – 19 March 2018

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 6:20 am

So yesterday it snowed most of the day.  This morning it had snowed all night but it had finally stopped – at least for now.  I took pictures from our apartment window to show you some of how it looked.

Once again all is coated in white as of 8:00 not much is moving.

This man was bringing his son (I believe) to the day-care/kindergarten downstairs. They were struggling to get through the snow.  The boy fell once and struggled to get up until his Dad went back to help him.

You might remember the parking lot across from our apartment where they shoveled around a pile of snow last storm. So far no one is working there. The man standing there is just passing by and perhaps stopped for a rest after climbing through the deep snow.

This van was stuck and it took several people, a lot of time and lots of shoveling to finally get it out and back on its way.

An unusual sight – a snow plow on our little road.

He was kind enough to pull this car out of the snow pile it was stuck in.

One man is starting to move snow in the parking lot across the road.

Later, some more came to help shovel. They shoveled in the middle to the sides – including the side that is the entrance.

The view out into our complex from the stairway. The roads are not any better over here.

The two cars are in the entrance to the parking lot. Question? How many does it take to shovel out a parking lot? In the end they only left the small entrance where the one car is then had to move the cars in to allow another car or two to enter.

Are they done?

Long before they finished the parking lot two men had shoveled parking places for four cars in this area up the road.

As always the view from our window is very interesting.  I tried to get pictures of the parents pulling their child in the sled into the day-care/kindergarten but I saw them too late and they were in the gates before I got the picture.

It is now 15:12 and it is snowing lightly.  We stayed home today instead of trying to climb our hill as we heard the trams were not going up the hill.  Tomorrow we hope to be able to get to the office – much to do there.  All is well and we are warm and dry.

International Women’s Day – Ukrainian Style

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 10:50 am

As I posted last year International Women’s Day is a big deal here is Ukraine.  The thing I love about it is not only is the focus on all women of all ages but everyone expresses great value and concern for all women of all ages.  Our two Ukrainian Elders each sent me sweet messages – not just Congratulations on Women’s Day or Happy Women’s Day but messages of their expressions of love and appreciation.  One was in Ukrainian and I had to us google to translate it but it was so sweet that I used google to hopefully send a nice reply.

Tonight our branch had a huge party for Women.  Now, here that means the whole family is invited to come – not just the women.  Last year was good but this year was amazing.  I give a great deal of credit to our branch president and to our Elder’s Quorum President, both husbands with sweet wives who are not yet members of the Church.  These are two great men who value women greatly.

When we arrived the chapel/multipurpose room was set up with balloons, a huge container of roses, and other decorations.

Room set up for the celebration.

Hint of the upcoming video. Mohammad is the first person on the video which came later. This is a tradition, at least since last year. Each of the brothers in the branch give a message in Russian. Elder Morgenegg’s message was “? ?????.” (I love you.)

Container of roses which were later moved to the top of the podium.

Prior to the beginning there was time to visit with the members and to watch the joy that they have in seeing each other.

Brother Igor is in the back (the Elder’s Quorum President). The brother in the front often wears this beautiful shirt of vyshyvanka embroidery.

Our branch president introduced the meeting and welcomed everyone.

Elder Morgenegg was asked to start the meeting with a spiritual thought. The young man next to him is our branch mission leader, who translated what Elder Morgenegg said. Elder Morgenegg talked about how we met and the revelation he had that he was going to marry me before we had even met. He also shared that next week we will have been married for 48 years – amazing where revelation can take you.

Than our branch president came in wearing a police man’s uniform. He is so funny.

He got this good brother to come up and play his guitar and sing. It was very good. I didn’t understand the words but the music was beautiful.

Here our branch mission leader, Kostya (“coastya”) is trying to teach the brothers to dance.

Still trying.

Still trying.

He is kicked out.

They know how to dance.

This young woman dances solo – she used to dance with her brother but now he has another partner. She is very amazing but it was hard to get pictures.

This was a skit kind of like telephone only the first person was given an action and had to pass it along. Like telephone it changed a lot at the end.

Passing it along. It was very fun to watch and the sisters were such good sports.

Igor and his daughter did a skit about a cave man and a cave woman. It was very funny.

His daughter.

Turns out she fought the bear and won.

This was a wonderful surprise. This brother sang a lovely love song and he has such a beautiful voice.

He invited his beautiful wife to join him for a dance and he sang just to her. Lovely.

Kostya dancing to Michael Jackson’s Beat It. Pictures cannot capture all he did.

Our branch president enlisted the help of three young women to pay back up for his trumpet. He is a professional musician and he is amazing. Truly gifted. It was a pleasure to listen to him play and the young women were a good back up.

Our brethren have a great sense of humor. the one on the left is selling roses. The one on the right want koses (I think). It is quite a discussion and he is sent off.

Then the second man wants loses. No.

Finally, this man wants noses. In the end they decide to give all the roses away and each woman of what ever age gets a long stemmed pink rose. What a lovely gift.

There was also a wonderful video of all the brethren saying something wonderful to the women, individually, and pictures of many of the women in our branch and then some bloopers at the end (which were very funny).

Then after a closing hymn (we did have an opening) and closing prayer we went into the other room for the food the brethren had prepared.  The table was beautiful and the food was so good.  It was such a wonderful treat to have the brethren host a party for all the women and they obviously delighted in every moment.

After, the counselor in our district presidency and Igor were joking around with the wigs from Igor’s skit. So silly.

It is truly wonderful to see the love that the brethren in our branch have for the women of all ages in our branch.  Truly they are a blessing to us all.

March – time to lop off trees

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 1:43 am

Last year I talked about how they lop off the trees here.  Well it is March and the tree lopping has begun.  Yesterday morning before we left for work we heard the saws going.  We could not see anything happening but a truck was parked near a tree and before we left they began the lopping.  Since we were already on the way to work I did not take pictures of the actual lopping but a picture of the finished work.  Here are the pictures I took from our window.

Truck parked and getting ready to work

Finished except for the clean up.

March Storm Update

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 3:35 am

In my last post I showed you how the beginning of the March storm looked.  Last night it snowed more.  When we first looked out we thought it was not much but we had already decided to stay in today.  As we watched the soap opera of vehicles outside we realized it is a lot of snow and like the earlier parts of the storm it is very drifted due to high winds – another good reason to stay in.  For now it is raining but there are a lot of people out and about.  Today is Saturday but since March 8th is a holiday – it is Women’s Day and many people will have a four day weekend because of it – many of those people have to work today.  The children’s day care downstairs is open which it usually is not on Saturday and there are many bringing their children in for the day.

So here are the pictures I took from our apartment windows down onto Polia Street.

Looking down into the parking lot of the passport center across Polia from our apartment there are some men moving snow and actually using shovels – often here they just use a broom – that is if the move the snow at all.

Here is a close up and you might be able to see that there is quite a bit of drifted snow in the middle pile.

The quit and left a pile in the middle – they had added to it as they shoveled so it is higher than it was and the cars have to drive around it since there are fences keeping them from driving in or out any other way.

This is looking down on the day care parking so you can see there are still places with virtually no snow.

For now it is raining and later more snow and ice.  We hope it will clear as they predict so we don’t have to walk in it to Church tomorrow and that the ice is not too bad.  Yesterday I hit a patch of ice on our way to the tram and landed on my rear end.  It was so sweet to see people stop to help me up – mostly just my ego was bruised.  You have to respect the ice here – it hides to catch you off guard if you are not careful.

Spring is coming soon for everyone but here they say it started on March 1st – what a spring!
