First Weekend in June – Another Adventure

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 11:07 am

Today was a beautiful day to be out and about.  We went shopping first thing for those necessities of the week.  Getting to the store by nine (it is in a inside mall) meant that the store was not busy at all.  This may become our new favorite time to shop.  We were not getting much so it didn’t take long and we were home by ten.  We put away the groceries and then went on our adventure.

This week we decided to go to a History Museum not far from our office.  It was a great choice.

So we crossed the street after we got off the tram just a block from the office and walked up the middle of the street (Yavornytskoho Avenue (Karla Marksa)) It is a lovely place to walk. You can see a statue up ahead - we have not yet discovered who it is.

In early May there were celebrations all around the city on Victory Day.  Last year I understand there were some injuries when the police and the people didn’t agree.  This year the police presence was immense to protect all.  There were still masses of people including many veterans who are all revered.  Victory Day is a national holiday in Ukraine on May 9. It is a day to remember victory over the Nazi regime during World War II.

We asked what this was and it seems that the city of Dnepr has been building an underground Metro for many years (like 30 or so) and it doesn't seem to be progressing too fast. We have never seen anyone working on it but the trams go around it and people seem to ignore it.

In the winter you can see this building better. It is a school and perhaps an exclusive one. The balloons are because yesterday was graduation and there were graduation ceremonies all over town. Everywhere from the kindergarten near us to the various elementary and high schools. Then later lots of families celebrating.

So that is the end of our walk today.  Not sure how far we walked – a lot.  It was a mile one way to the tram and then all the walking around the park and the Opera House – blocks and blocks.

Still no rain.

Another Saturday – another adventure

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 3:29 am

Saturday is our day to go out and check out the sights.  Sometimes we stay close to home but sometimes we venture farther.  Although thunderstorms were predicted for mid day (it is now 1 pm and still not rain) we decided we were safe to go our early in the day.  We left a little later than we planned but by a little after nine we were on our way.

This time I suggested we take the tram to the large park we pass on our way to the Branch each Sunday.  It looks like a lot is happening there.  Today it was quiet which we were glad of but there is a lot to do and I am sure by mid day it was filled with children and adults.

On the way on the tram I took a few pictures of places we also see each time we go to the Branch.

Exploring our Neighborhood

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 8:00 am

20 May 2017

We decided, since it was threatening rain, to explore our neighborhood.  That way if it did start raining we would not have far to go to get home and dry.  As always there was much to see.  Lots of dead ends but that is partly because so much here is gated and if you don’t have access you cannot even walk into a gated area.  Sometimes gates are open and anyone can walk in – sometimes that is not the case.  Across Polia (our street) there is an apartment complex that is gated but the car entrance is never closed.  Sometimes ours is open as well but not usually.

First we walked up Polia like going to work, but we turned left instead of right.  We had not walked on this street before and it was interesting to see what was there.  I didn’t take pictures as we are cautioned not to take pictures of government buildings and I was not sure what was and was not one – better safe than sorry.  This street is actually quite short and ends on the major road that comes between our apartment and the river.  There was obviously something going on as there were booths and stages and coverings set up on the river side and there were a lot of cars with bicycles and people dressed in serious biking gear.  We decided not to walk into the crowds and turned around to walk back down the street.

We crossed the street and passed a building that we discovered (with our limited Russian) is a music academy and we could hear pianos and other instruments playing.  We walked up the path and up some stairs in the back but ended in a dead end with a muddy walkway before us so we turned around and went down the stairs and back out to the street.

As we walked up the street we tried to find a way into as small community we have seen with some actual houses – not apartment buildings – we were not successful.  We went down some more stairs and walked back a ways but ended up coming back the way we came and back up the stairs.  Then we crossed the road (that we usually climb up to go to work) and started to explore that road.  As we went along we saw some very interesting houses.  Some very new.  Also some other academies.  There are lots of them here.  Some are high schools and some are colleges.  It seems children can specialize in high school.  There is a planetarium on our road to work that seems to have high school children going in each day and it seems to have a tall building attached to it.

So here is some of what we saw.

I titled this a Domed Doma. We think the roof is very interesting.

As we neared the road to our apartment complex we noticed the road was blocked off with police cars at the end and blocking the side roads and rerouting people who came near.  This picture shows a nice quiet road – not usually the case.  Not sure how those cars are getting around but they are not there.  This was about 2 or so and it may have been blocked for a while.

So we are home and have been for a while.  After we got home we saw that there were actually people swimming in the Dnepr River.  I don’t know why anyone would do that.  Then we saw runners on the walkway and more bikers that seemed to be dressed more seriously.  So we googled it and we found that today and tomorrow are the annual Dnepropetrovsk Triathlon Fest.  If you want to you can check it out at:

https://ukraine-kiev-tour.com/2017/dnipro-dnepr-triathlon-fest.html

It is now 6 and the road is still blocked.  We still see bikers out and runners.  We heard some excitement a little while ago and wondered if it was the winner finishing but it is still going on.  It is so loud we can hear it without opening our windows and if we open our windows it is really loud.  The center seems to be across the road from where we saw the bikers in the beginning of our walk.  As we have read about it this is a huge thing and continues tomorrow.  We don’t know how long the road will be closed or what happens tomorrow for sure but no doubt it is a party today and probably tonight as well.  It seems we live in a very exciting city.

Hope you enjoyed going along and learning some more about this great city.
