Interesting Houses and other buildings

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 12:07 am

I thought I would collect some interesting photos of buildings around Dnepro.  We have only seen a few that would qualify as actual houses but they may be apartment buildings as well.  We have been told that it is unusual for anyone to live one family in a house here in the city but in the country it is more common.  Most people like apartment living.  Some of these buildings we pass every day on our way to work others we see going to Church or to other places.

This first one we pass everyday and it seems to fill most of a block and is a combination of styles.  There are also buildings within the complex that you cannot see in this photo.

Notice the new and the old combined in this building.

This is the private kindergarten that is next door to our building from the ninth floor. It seems like a very nice place to go to school.

Another view of the apartments close to ours that are very nice with the run down buildings near by. At the right is actually another school - perhaps another kindergarten or day care as it is mostly young children and there are interesting things to play with and on in the front.

To the left is the walkway we take to our apartment between the very nice buildings and the "dump" which is filled with litter and broken down buildings.

We pass this building everyday. At one time I think it was probably a beautiful building but now it has grafiti on it and broken windows and it is a crumbling version of what once was. We often hear dogs barking inside.

Another interesting building we pass every day. It seems to be made of wood instead of bricks or concrete like most buildings are. It is in very bad condition but is obviously lived it as we often see people coming out or going in and we hear sounds coming from it as well. Not very inviting though.

This looks like a church but it seems to have apartments in it as well. There is often a woman or a man out sweeping (with a short broom) and it is well kept and in very good condition unlike some buildings.

This is a part of the large Jewish synagog and museum that we pass going to Church every week. The three level towers are also a part of it. It is a huge complex that has entrances on this side of the block and on the other side as well.. There are other buildings that are older that are part of it as well.

On the next block over is a small simple Church. This old building is attached to it and the picture is showing the large cathedral they plan to build using this old building. The building is very ornate but the windows are mostly broken out and the outside is crumbling. It will be interesting to see what if anything changes before we leave to return home.

This is just for fun. It is a cute little house - not sure if you can really go inside but it does have a door and a window.

This is the other side of the little house - obviously an advertisement for the restaurant inside the hotel.

As we go around I will try to get pictures of other interesting things to share but here are a few for now.  Hope you enjoyed the tour.  It is fun to see all the interesting things here.

Where to park?

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 11:46 pm

We are seeing that here in Dnepro there is limited parking and so people park wherever they find space – literally.  They park on the sidewalk and make it difficult to walk around them.  They park on the side of the street even when the street is very narrow and doesn’t have room for parking.  They park in some really interesting places around the city and often block in others and make traveling by road or walkway difficult or at least interesting.  I took some pictures from our ninth floor stairwell to show how they park in our complex.  There are no actual parking places laid out but they find whatever they can.  Also, I need to take a picture of the interesting things they have here that “mark” a spot or stop traffic from driving on a roadway.  They seem to be attached to the road somehow and then are locked up or down.  Hard to explain – I will try to remember to get a picture.  So here are the pictures I took.

Would you like to have to back out of here? I would not.

This is actually a not crowded day. Sometimes you wonder how they got in let alone how they will get out.

District Relief Society Meeting

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 11:33 pm

For the Relief Society Birthday the District had a very nice celebration with a lovely program with all the branches contributing talent and skits and music and a slide show.  There were also lovely refreshments afterwards.  It was a wonderful afternoon and a great way to spend time with the sisters here.  Here are a few pictures I took.

The women dressed in western pioneer and Ukrainian pioneer costumes.

The three women on the left are dressed in costumes made by one of the women in the district.  They also had an old sewing machine and assorted pioneer effects to go with their skit about the origins of Relief Society.  Then the woman to the right of center is in a traditional Ukrainian embroidered skirt and blouse.  You cannot see the flowers in her braided hair.  Next is another version of Ukrainian traditional dress but more of the country dress.  The last is a modern Ukrainian woman representing the women of today as Ukraine was dedicated in 1992 and so is a very modern pioneer country in our Church.  All three of these women sang and the one on the far right recited a very long poem which was fully memorized and beautifully given.

This woman had on a traditional Ukrainian head dress and sang a beautiful Ukrainian lullaby.

Here is a close up of the same woman where you can see the flowers in her head dress and the ribbons hanging down. It is taken with my phone and not a great picture but hopefully gives you a flavor of it.

This was such a good skit.  The woman standing kept going back and forth to different conversations.  The woman on the left is the one that is being visited.  It was so fun to see that everyone understands the concept of what is right and everyone understands what is wrong – no matter what the language.

Here are seven of the sisters from our branch. The one third from the left is the Relief Society President. The one on the far left is Sister Sheremet who has been in three times now to work with me in the office on mission histories. She told me Sunday she learned English 25 years ago and is trying to practice with her children who also learned so she can talk to me. We talk in a mix of languages but I have come to love her and when she was in yesterday she gave me a big hug. If I feel such love in four months it will be hard to leave when the time comes.

So that was our activity.  It was wonderful in every way.
