Sourdough Adventures continue!

Filed under: Adventures Intro — admin @ 4:04 pm

I have really enjoyed my experiments with my sour dough starter.  Having started it from scratch from only flour and water I am really happy it has been so active.  While it was maturing we have enjoyed sour dough pretzels, sour dough biscuits, sour dough waffles, sour dough english muffins, sour dough french bread, sour dough chocolate cake, sour dough lemon cake, sour dough blueberry muffins (not nearly as good as Andrea’s recipe but with some tweeking it might become comparable) and one other loaf of sour dough bread.  I have learned a lot along the way.  For one thing you cannot knead sour dough like regular bread – you “fold” it.  I got a plastic scrapper that I use to fold it that is so easy to use.  This is still a lot of learning but I am getting better.  Looking forward to cutting into this loaf later today.

My starter is crazy active and this loaf really rose as it cooked. Those are chocolate chip cookies in the background.

May 15th and the garden is looking so good!

So life is very busy here, especially for Carl.  He has cleared so many areas of our yard.  Some he had done last year but had to dig up this year and that was some easier but still a lot of work.  I am so grateful he is willing to do all this hard labor as our yard is looking wonderful.  They neighbors have all commented on it so I am glad they also appreciate his hard work.  I am including the updated pictures of our gardening.  It is only May 15th and we are mostly planted for this year.  Yeah for that.

We learned last year that this bed is shaded by the tree and sun loving plants don’t do well here but impatients love it so that is what we planted. They will spread and fill the bed.

Carl has just a little more to dig up before this area is finished and we will plant the rest of our corn for this year. We hope to at least have corn for eating fresh – nothing like corn fresh from the garden. YMMM!

We have this small group of dark purple iris (there is another small group on the hill) and they are so pretty but so lonely. If we can find another location we will probably move them together.

Our peonies are starting to bloom. They are four different colors but for now the two the are blooming look similar. We shall see when the other blooms open what color they actually are.

Our garden from above. The basil, parsley and chives in the raised bed are doing great. We have radishes up and kale just starting. The tomato plants are looking good as well.

Carl’s completed rock garden with the phlox planted. Right now they look sparse but we know they will fill in.

The east side of the flower bed around the upper patio. These are wave petunias and we know they will spread and fill in – they already are some.

The back of the flower bed around the upper patio.

The west side of the bed.

So this is how our garden grows right now.  I love the way it looks and hope I can do my part in the necessary weeding along the way.  Happy Spring to you all!

Carl’s Outside Adventures

Filed under: Adventures Intro — admin @ 9:05 am

Today is May 9 2020.  Tomorrow is Mother’s Day and Carl has been very busy working outside getting our flower and vegetable beds in shape.  It has been a lot of work but not as much work as the Peony bed was.  There are some rocks but so far no big rocks or tree roots to deal with.  It is looking really nice and I am excited to soon have it all planted and growing.  So here are some updated photos for you to see his work.

Here is the finished picture of our peony plants. We have a lot of blooms on the two larger ones and hope to see peonies soon.

Last year Becky and Daniel built me a raised bed for a garden and this year we moved it up into the overgrown garden so it will be watered by the sprinkler system. I had chives already growing and have added parsley and basil. That is it for this year.

You can see here how the herbs are above the rest of the garden. We are only planting on the first tier this year as that is all Carl is going to clear. The first part has some radishes (in front of what you see), kale and then the tomatoes you can see. The plants behind the tomatoes are going to go into the flower beds once they are cleared and into the rock garden. Beyond those Carl still has to clear. He cleared some at the end and we planted corn and will plant corn in the area yet to clear as well. Just enough to eat fresh.

Another view of the lower tier of out garden

Bushes that were overgrown last year. Carl cut them way back and they are coming back beautifully.

These hostas are really doing well.

The rock garden Carl is building from below.

Close up of the upper part of the rock garden.

The upper part still to clear of the rock garden. We have Phlox in various colors to plant in this garden.

Flower garden around patio. We will plant Wave Petunias on the sides and Vinca on the back.

So, this may be more than you wanted to see but it was easier than just adding lots of pictures to my e-mail.  Hope you are all well and finding lots to occupy your “free” time.  Love you all.

Our Finished Cold Storage Room

Filed under: Adventures Intro — admin @ 4:24 pm

So for an April gift, Carl has finished the Cold Storage Room.  For those who might be curious this room has concrete for ceiling (it is under our front porch), floor, back wall and one of the side walls.  The temperature in this room is generally quite a bit cooler than the already cool basement so a great place to store foods.  Carl insulated the other walls and then after putting up and finishing the wall board, he painted and put in the shelves.  Here are a few pictures of the finished product.

No more tools and a nice clean floor

On this side there are shelves (on the near right) that will hold all my spices and more shelves for baking needs and other items.

The other side of the storage room. Notice the thermometer on the far shelf.

I spent much of yesterday putting contact paper on the shelves.  I had debated bringing the large roll of contact paper I had used to cover our old ugly shelves in New York (before we redid our kitchen) but decided to put it in.  Glad I did as it covered almost all the shelves.  They look so nice I would hate for the cans to scratch them too soon.  Today I spent most of the day moving our food storage back in.  It is nice to see it all on the shelves again and to be able to know exactly what I do and do not have.  There is still some organization I want to do.   I had thought we would get drawers for the spices but they are just too expensive so I am using the boxes I got cans in for them for now and later will get some kind of containers to organize them in.  It is nice to have them all where I can see them and know what I do and do not have.  I also have some things upstairs that will now go downstairs instead of cluttering up our cupboards upstairs.

The one side of the storage room with empty shelves waiting for our filled water bottles (still need to fill them). This side has some canning jars, baking supplies, juices and drinks, oil, and jams.
Under the cabinets are assorted containers with bulk storage, grains, beans, corn, and more. The bag is sugar waiting for a container.

This is the other side which is very full. This is mostly canned things, but snacks and pasta are on the end and a bag of flour waiting for a container. Under these shelves is all the wheat we have still double stacked in 5 gallon buckets.

This is the inside of the door and the entrance to the cold storage room. The shelves on the door have jello, pudding and over-sized spice containers. Inside the door you can see the clipboard for recording what is used. I have already inventoried what we have but that is not yet printed out. The opening under the clip board provides access to the light switch.

Reality is this was not that long a project to complete but because it made me feel so disorganized it felt like longer than it was.  I am so grateful for Carl’s patience and knowledge and abilities.  His attention to detail has given us a wonderful room to store our extra food in and to feel more prepared.
