A Cold Blustery Winter Saturday in Dnepropetrovsk

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 9:41 am

Today was the day after what was to be a big storm.  It was actually a big storm – just not so much here.  We probably only got about three or four inches of snow and then some icy stuff on top of that – so I went out to put the garbage out and slipped several times – it is icy.  Despite that we decided to take a walk and if it wasn’t too icy to go across the main road and walk along the river.  Well, it was icy but we went anyway and so we walked to the light and crossed the road (a four lane busy road) and there is a very nice walk way near the river.  They had plowed the walkway – sort of but we didn’t go down to the river as you would have to walk through the snow to do that.  We walked a ways one direction and then turned to walk the other way.  It was blustery and very cold so after a while we decided we had had enough and we walked back to the cross walk, stopped at the market for some milk and eggs and went home.

It was nice to get out.  Here are some pictures from our walk.

This building is across the way from our apartment and we noticed today there are trees on the roof. Interesting.

As we started to walk near the river we noticed a lot of birds flying in the air. Not sure if this shows them well but there were so many it was eerie.

Here is the bridge that is just north of where we live. There are actually three bridges across the river here in Dnepr.

Although there are "normal" trash cans around there are also lots of trash bins like this around. One the street and here on the walkway. People just put there household trash and whatever in then. Interesting - although we have also seen a lot of trash on the road and along the roads.

Not far from us is a huge round building called the circus and it actually is a circus with animals and all. It is very noisy with music playing often.

I saw this in the distance on the walkway and it reminded my of the movie Big where Tom Hanks is searching for a certain game machine to make him young again. This is actually a boxing game but seemed to bring back that memory anyway.

I thought this looked like an interesting place. I think it is a restaurant - but I don't know as I can't read the sign - well I can read it but I have no idea what it says.

There is a bowling alley down the street from where we live. The missionaries were going bowling on their last preparation day but I don't know if it was here or not.

Our first “Real” Snow!!!

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 11:00 am

As predicted our first real snow came today.  Although right now it is not snowing it is supposed to snow overnight and if the prediction is right we could have a total of 8 to 12 inches when all is done.  The weather report says freezing rain for now – that is not a good thing as we all know.

So here are some pictures of our first real snow.

This is a view of the snow coming down shortly before we left for home today taken from our office window.

President Sullivan was in the office today working and told us he was closing the office at four. He also offered to drive us home and we happily accepted. As we went out he was clearing his car without gloves on. You can see some build up. Not as much as Utah and Idaho have seen but more than we have seen.

The Mission Office

A number of people have commented they wanted to know more about what we do.  I will send an e-mail with some details but here are some pictures to give you an idea of where we work.

Here I am at my desk. The missionary who took this picture insisted I put up Russian papers but I doubt you can see it. Yes, I do sometimes type in Russian, even in Ukrainian, but mostly I work in English.

Here is the beautiful foyer in our office - it is what you see when you step off the elevator (when it works which it has been a lot lately).

Down the short hall from my desk is our office kitchen - just a small kitchen which is fine to heat our lunch in. We also use it to prepare and serve lunches to those who come in for meetings, like the mission leaders conferences held once every six weeks. Then it is very inadequate but we make it work.

Here is Dad/Grandpa/Carl in his office. He has a large glass window where he can see what is happening in the rest of the office. I can see him from my desk. His office locks since he has the mission safe and many confidential files in his office.

This is the back hall where many of our mission supplies are stored. One of the big jobs I have yet to take on is the inventory - UGH! At the end of the hall is a door to the stairs that we have to use when the elevator is out. We pray for the elevator to work so we don't have to climb all the stairs to our fifth floor office. By the way, the blue boxes are for mail for the missionaries and the open shelves are where we store all the boxes they get until I get them mailed out to the missionaries.

A New Year Sunrise and our Daily Walk

Filed under: Adventures Intro,Our Mission — admin @ 10:28 am

The other morning I looked out the window as we were getting breakfast ready and saw such a beautiful sunrise.  I took a picture but it didn’t really do it justice.  It is here anyway.

Such a bright a beautiful sunrise.

Here is a view going up our hill. This is near the bottom and you cannot even see the top yet. If you could see closer you could see a traffic light - that is mostly the top of the hill. It is less of a hill from then on for the last block before we turn the corner to go to our office.

It is less of a hill from then on for the last block before we turn the corner to go to our office. This doesn’t really show how steep the hill is so I will try again another day to take a better picture.

As you turn the corner at the top of the hill there is this tree that is wrapped in colorful blankets. I wonder if it is wrapped year long or only in winter. We shall see in the spring if the wrapping comes off.
